How Your Zakat Is Distributed to the Eight Categories

The eight categories of eligible recipients defined in Surah At-Tawbah, and how we apply them.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, due annually on wealth held above the Nisab threshold for a full lunar year. The Qur'an names eight categories of eligible recipient in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60): the poor, the needy, those employed to administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, the debt-ridden, those in the cause of Allah, and the wayfarer. Zakat funds are kept separate from general donations and are distributed only to recipients falling within those categories. This is why Zakat is always taken as a single payment rather than a monthly subscription: it is an annual obligation assessed against your wealth on a particular date, not a recurring gift.

Your donations make stories like this possible. Every pound you give reaches those in need — that's the Baraka 100% promise.
